Ice fishing is one of the best ways to get outside during the wintertime. However, if you like to stay warm the goal is to get to your ice fishing hut or tent as fast as possible. The problem is you need to make the frigid journey on your snowmobile or tracked vehicle out on the lake.  We have had ice fishing trail issues too many times.

Along this journey, you can encounter lots of different trails conditions that…..well suck.

These ice fishing trail issues come to mind as things I have struggled with getting on the lake to go ice fishing.

  • Snow on top but slush underneath then ice under that and it is easy to get stuck.
  • Whoops from other snowmobiles or ATV’s.
  • Too much snow after a while because the trail was never groomed.
  • Ruts from other machines crisscrossing the trail you need to be on.
  • The trail can become so rough it hurts your back just getting to your ice fishing shack.

I am old enough that riding my snowmobile across the rough trails is not that fun.  So grooming it every time it snows makes for a great trail.  Lots of the other fisherman will then follow my trail and criss-cross it way less.

 

Also when grooming and packing a trail the ice can become thicker.  When snow is left on top it really is good insulation and leaves not as thick of ice.  Thicker ice is a big deal in some cases.

Letting the cold do its job makes it so when you park your sled, it does not sink into the slush and does not freeze into the slush that is sometimes under the snow.

 

When you make a smooth trail it definitely gets used more than a rough snow trail.
